Chief Election Commission (CEC) of Pakistan former Justice Fakhruddin G Ebrahim removed Sindh Chief Election Commissioner Sono Khan Baloch from his office, as some political and religious parties voiced concerns over his appointment. Sono Khan has been appointed, as Director General Budget Election Commission. A notification to this effect has been issued here on Monday.

Six political parties had urged the CEC to remove Sono Khan for his alleged involvement in irregularities in electoral rolls. These parties had filed a written complaint against Sindh CEC in a letter sent to the Chief CEC, former Justice Fakhruddin G Ibrahim. The parties included Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), Sunni Tahreek, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F), JUI-P, and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The JI also demanded verification of electoral rolls in Karachi under supervision of the Army along with the removal of provincial election commission staff. JI argued that it would be a futile exercise to conduct verification of the voter lists in the presence of the current staff.
